How to Remove Ozone from Your Home

Hello, guys welcome back to this series of guides I’ve made, hope all the articles so far have matched your expectations and solved all the little everyday problems we all have. So as of today we are gonna se how to remove ozone from our home as fast as possible.

Ozone is mainly formed from outdoor pollution emissions, namely the smog of cars and the toxic steams coming out of power plants, heavy industrial facilities, chemical factories, and stuff like these. I recently found out that ozone is particularly present in the lower atmosphere (where we live) when the sun is shining and there’s no wind, as the sun, as the sunlight interacts with different forms of nitrous oxide and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) emitted by these facilities and breaks them into new compounds, including ozone.

Keep an eye on the ozone levels

Never underestimate the level of ozone in your area: according to where you live it may vary from really low if you live in a countryside area to very high if you live in urban areas where the pollution emitted by cars and industrial facilites are quite high.

To measure the level of the ozone you caneasily buy a specific monitor online. Even the cheapest ones usually give an idea of the amout of ozone in the air. If you don’t want to buy a monitor, there are also some websites which detect and monitor the levels of ozone in a specific region, and others can even predict the levels of ozone in the following days.

Ok now going to the practical stuff, how do we remove the ozone from our home? It is actually quite simple if you have the right tools.

Filters

The good thing about ozone is that its chemical compound, formed by three atoms, can easily break and leave one atom on other surfaces, leaving just O2 (oxigen) in the air. So, many filters take advantage of this and use specific materials which grasp that atom. Unexpectedly, at least for me, I read online that most of the everyday heating or air conditioning (specifically HVAC units) use a filter which is designed to do that! These HVAC units, known as ventilation, heating or air conditioning are equipped with these filters to enhance their performance, and they are quite effective to remove the ozone in the air too.

As you can see, this is one of the easiest ways to remove ozone from your house, as you don’t need to buy specific units or other things such as filters to get rid of the ozone.

Another method to remove the ozone from your home is to use carbon filters. By this I mean activated carbon filters, which hold te molecules of ozone in the air and break it into oxigene. Some some powered air purifiers are enhanced with carbon filters. These create a surface which prevent the ozone to go into the air and its molecules remain stuck on the carbon surface. There are some products which have the carbon filters as a standard, while you can change filters for others. You can find all the specific types ofpowered air purifiers that you want online or in your local stores.

Check how air purifiers work

See? These are some easy ways to remove ozone from your home and enjoy fresh air with no concerns whatsoever. In addition, most of the air purifiers usually take no more than 1 hour to clean the air in a house, making them very efficient and low cost for the amount of energy used.

However there are really few small drawbacks when using the powered air purifiers. Mainly, you’ll have really dry air in your house. I remember that when I was in Beijing I had to use an air purifier, and this was a bit uncomfortable for me as I felt the air in the room was getting really dry and it affected my nose and eyes. To avoid such effects, either you limit the amount of time you use your air purifier or you try to balance the level of humidity in the room (or house) by adding another small unit which relaeses small molecules of water in the air in order to produce a bit more of moisture. Another method is to just put a pot with some boiling water at the corner of the room, the steam will get the job done in an easier and cheaper way.

Preventing the ozone from circulating in the air

There is an old say which goes like this: better to prevent than to cure, and this is always true. In this case, there are some tricks to prevent the accumulation of ozone in oyur home. First of all, try to remove all the units which might produce ozone. I’m talking about electrical chargers and similar powered stuff. Then, if you live in urban areas, try to close the windows when you know it’s rush hour and all the city dwellers seem to have taken their cars for a ride. Another useful thing is to install building materials which neutralize ozone and can reduce its level over long periods of time. For instance, the passive filtration of perlite-based ceilings tiles and activated carbon mats help controlling the levels of ozone in the house.

So at the end of the day you have many ways to either prevent or control the levels of ozone in your home, you just have to choose what fits the most with your lifestyle and your possibilities, but in general keep an eye on the ozone level is always a good thing to remember, and to keep in check the quality of the air you’re breathing.

Hope you enjoyed this article and, ’till we see again, have a good one. Cheers!
